DIY Room Decor: Christmas Lights to Bubble Lights

Written by , Posted in DIY

A string of Christmas lights is one of the easiest and cutest touches to a bed frame or vanity, but what happens when Christmas is over? Realistically I’m 110% okay with keeping my lights around all year long, but if you’re in the mood for a decor change once all your other Christmas decor has been put away, this DIY is perfect!

MATERIALS
1. Ping Pong Balls – Walmart (you can buy them in bulk for super cheap on amazon as well!)
2. LED Christmas Lights – Rite Aid
***SAFETY NOTE***
Ping pong balls are flammable, so make sure you’re using LED lights which don’t heat up!!
3. Xacto Knife

DIY: No Sew Icecream Pillow

Written by , Posted in DIY

I recently decided that combining two of my favourite things (icecream + sleeping) would be a ground breaking idea for a DIY. And to be honest, it’s been one of my best ideas yet!! There’s nothing more satisfying than taking a slumber with or on an icecream pillow, and it’s the cutest pillow on my couch hands down. It’s also even more satisfying throwing an icecream pillow at someone versus a regular one. And I know everyone has a huge thing against sewing (myself included), so I made sure to make this a no sew DIY! Here’s how:

MATERIALS
1. Plaid Cone Coloured Fabric (I used 1/2 yard to make mine) – Fabricland
2. Colourful Fabric For Ice-Cream Scoop (I used 1/2 yard) – Fabricland
3. Pillow Stuffing – Walmart
4. Scissors
5. Hot Glue Gun

Christmas is just around the corner and I couldn’t be more excited. Has my mini Christmas tree been up for two weeks already? Maybe. Did I hang up stockings for my roommate and I in November? Possibly. I get a little over the top when getting into the Christmas spirit and today I’m sharing three DIYs to help get your room just as ready as I am for Christmas! Here’s what you’ll need:

DIY Apartment Decor for the Broke & Creative

Written by , Posted in Contents

I recently moved into a new apartment that graciously allowed full reign over decorating and painting, and let me tell you, after a year in a fully yellow apartment, I was SO ready for freedom to decorate. I spent about 95% of my summer scouring Pinterest for inspiration and ways to decorate on a University student budget; here are the DIYs that made the final cut to the new apartment. Keep your eyes peeled for more home decor DIYs to come, because my living room still needs a few bits and bobs! Here’s a round up of the tutorials and materials involved in each.

1. Vintage Mirror to Chalkboard

What You Need:

1) Mirror – Garage Sale
2) Small Mirror – Value Village
3) Chalkboard Paint – (1 bottle) Michaels
4) Small/Large Paintbrush
5) Chalk – Michaels

2. Ombre Decor Piece/Book Ends

What You Need:

1) Rocks (found on a random hill LOL) – try for dry rocks opposed to rocks near water that might have moss on them
2) Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Gloss in Blue Ocean Breeze
3) Krylon Metallic Gold Spray Paint

3. Flower Wall Chains

What You Need:

1) Fishing Wire – Hardware Store/Craft Store/Walmart
2) Fake Flowers – Dollar Store

DIY: Custom Statement Beanies

Written by , Posted in Contents

It’s no secret (especially if you follow me on instagram), that I’m a huge fan of beanies, especially now that it’s fall and appropriate to wear them with more of an excuse than covering up a bad hair day. It’s become kind of problem though… I think every outfit looks better with a beanie and feel slightly lost without one. I’ve really been into statement beanies lately too, which I first discovered at Brandy Melville. Adorned with sassy phrases in bad ass fonts, I instantly felt the need to buy three of each. That idea got shut down real quick when I glanced at the price tag though, hence the DIY! Happy beanie-ing babes, get creative!

MATERIALS
1) Beanies – Target $5 (I’ve seen them at Spring, Walmart, Boathouse, Zumiez, Pacsun!)
2) Iron on Letters – Michaels $5
3) Iron (make sure you’re using the wool setting)
4) Thin cotton fabric (a pillow case, t shirt etc.)
5) Stop Watch

DIY: Brandy Melville Wooden Sign

Written by , Posted in Contents

So if you’ve ever been to Brandy Melville, you’ve probably spent at least a few minutes drooling over their super cute wooden signs. And with good reason! They’re typically adorned with sassy phrases, the classic brandy logo or something a bit more personal like University names, and this Christmas season, I’m going to show you how to make one so you can customize it to your liking! These signs make a great present for a friend, family or even for yourself! I spent a total of $13 on this project and got three signs out of it that I’m totally in love with. Here’s what you need:

DIY MATERIALS
1. 8 x 12″ Wooden Plank – Home Hardware $6
2. Acrylic Paint – Michaels
3. Wood Stain – Home Hardware $5
4. Masking Tape
5. Scissors
6. Letter Templates OR Printer Paper
7. Paintbrushes

FONT: Roboto – totally said Robotic in the vid oops! size 275

*Helvetic which is already installed on your computer is a great alternative!

SONG: Grizzly Bear Vs. Lupe Fiasco – Two Weeks of Aerials & Varials

ADDING A WIRE HOOK: I left this part out because of the need for power tools that I figured the majority of viewers wouldn’t have access too! But in the case that you do have a drill and parental guidance to help you with it, you can drill two holes in the top and wrap a wire around each to make a hanging loop to attach to walls and such!

Last Minute Watermelon Halloween Costume

Written by , Posted in Contents

So it’s pretty much common knowledge if you’ve been following my Halloween series that I put a lot of thought into my costumes. Maybe a little too much thought (aka thought process that starts in August). But I know the majority of people are just looking for a quick, cheap and easy costume to DIY within a few hours of their Halloween plans. And guess what! I’ve totally got you! You really can’t beat a total cost of about $10 and 2 hours to make this costume, and I think it’s seriously cute! A long shirt can be really versatile – switch it up into a kiwi, starbucks cup, fav beverage can… the possibilities are endless! But for this tutorial, we’re going to keep it watermelony… with a watermelon tutorial (watermelony is definitely in the dictionary). Enjoy!

What You’ll Need:

1) Pink Dress/Shirt – Ardene’s
2) Tape – Dollar Store (or lime green fabric paint)
3) Black Fabric Paint – Michaels
4) Paintbrush
5) Scissors
6) Scrap Cardboard

I SUCK AT BLOGGING BUT NOW IM BACK BBY

Written by , Posted in Contents

So basically that title sums up my more than poor blogging habits in the last four months. HOW HAVE I NOT POSTED SINCE JULY? HOW DO THESE THINGS HAPPEN? Anyways, we’ve all concluded that I’ve been really poo at blogging, but I’m actually back now. For real.

And since I’m about a millennium behind, be sure to check out my youtube channel to keep up with all my videos, because I’ve been 110% consistent on my channel! I post videos every Sunday, and sometimes during the week when my schedule allows it. I’m going to try to make little posts about all the DIYs I missed a blog post for, but I figured I would start with my halloween tutorials!

I’m actually in LOVE with halloween because of the opportunity the holiday gives you to be totally creative about your costume. I’m that kid that starts thinking about what they want to be at the end of August. I’m not kidding, I get that stoked about it. So I’ve planned out a little mini series called #laurDIYhalloween ! Here’s a recap of the first three videos.

4) Twist Ties/String for attaching to bands
5) Scissors
6) Ruler & Tape
7) Matching Coloured Dress – Stitches ($3 – I like tube dresses best but if you’re more comfortable with a dress with sleeves/straps that would be super cute too!)

2) white top: garage
3) stretchy material for a waistband (headbands, nylons, etc.): dollarstore

DIY: Chain Head Piece

Written by , Posted in DIY

Lately I’ve been been loving all things involving accessorizing your hair/head (apparently… looking at my consecutive head accessory videos). I think these dainty gold head chains are also a bit more wearable than the flower crown as well (I would be more likely to rock the headchain anyways!). This DIY is pretty much just some simple bracelet making techniques to fabricate a super simple but eye-catching chain head piece! I dare you to wear it!

Pliers, Wire Cutters & Scissors – hardware/beading/dollar stores
String – Any craft store/beading store

DIY: Daisy Flower Crown

Written by , Posted in DIY

I’ve been absolutely loving the flower crown trend lately, they’re the perfect summer accessory for a music festival or to finish off a summer boho look. I feel as if flower crowns haven’t quite made their grand debut into stores yet, and while you can find tons on etsy and online stores, I like being able to see accessories like this for size and colour reasons. Here’s how to boho-ify your hair!

MATERIALS
glue gun – walmart
fake flowers – dollar store
headband – ardenes (can be found at any drug store/accessory store)
scissors
permanent marker

WHAT IM WEARING
dress – brandy melville
vest – sammydress
necklace – urban outfiters

No Heat Curls For Summer!

Written by , Posted in Beauty

I’ve tried just about everything in the book to get great curls without using any (or minimal) heat. I’ve done the headband, the sock bun, the rope braid, you name it – I’ve done it. The biggest issue I find with each of these methods is that all of them tend to leave some kind of marking on your hair, whether it’s from an elastic, clip or headband. So although this method isn’t the most convenient time-wise (but let’s get real – it’s really not comfortable to sleep with your hair pincurled to your head) I find that it gives the best results with NO MARKINGS!! Here’s how:

*and yes, I know I accidentally put in the same clip twice!

STEPS:
Optional: Apply a curl defining mousse/product.
1. On 90% dry hair, separate your layers (if any), and curl the shortest layer away from your face and fasten the twist above your ear
2. Twist the remaining hair to the end and fasten to your shirt with a toothless clip
3. Repeat on the opposite side of your hair, making sure to twist away from you face.

Hair Clips: Shoppers Drug Mart
Moroccan Oil: Salon (you can find it online/any high end salon)
Garnier Fructis Full Control Anti-Humidity Hairspray (with natural bamboo extract): Shoppers Drug Mart
Teasing Comb: Sallys Beauty Supply

DIY: Ombre/Tie Dye Sundress

Written by , Posted in DIY

Okay so I know that the summer we’re having isn’t even really summer, it’s basically summer on steroids, but this is a perfect DIY for a cute summer coverup for the beach, pool or summer day outing! I was contacted via tumblr by a girl who requested this really cute tie dyed dress from urban outfitters, and I really only used the dress as inspiration as you’ll see that my dress looks absolutely nothing like the UO one (I got a little dye crazy!). This is also a great DIY to just go wild with your creativity, there’s no rules when it comes to tie dying!!

MATERIALS
Tie Dye Kit – Michaels
Spray Bottles – Dollar Store
Oversized Shirt/Dress (size 12) – H&M
White Fitted Underdress – H&M
Sunglasses – Nine West
Belt – Forever 21
Top in Intro/Outro – Garage

1. scrunch/pinch the shirt into small bunches
2. thoroughly cover the scrunched shirt with the first colour
3. unscrunch and rescrunch the shirt
4. cover the shirt with the second colour
5. repeat for desired number of colours!
6. hand wash with cold water until the water runs clear
7. machine wash with dark coloured towels/by itself for the first few washes!

The (very late) Official Launch of Lucky Deer Cases!

Written by , Posted in Style

I can’t believe how big of a slacker I’ve been lately on these blog posts!! My excuse is that YouTube is actually pretty demanding in terms of upload frequency and interacting with my subscribers. But it all started here on D&I so I have to make sure I don’t get too far behind! If you lovely readers remember, I spoke about a super exciting project that I had been working on for a while (I think I first mentioned it in one of my Puerto Vallarta vlogs), and I also had a giveaway video where I asked you guys to help pick the 5th case in the LDCase line. Well Lucky Deer Cases is has come to life in the form of 5 different designs! I can’t thank you all enough for letting this happen, because without all of you and your support this would never have been possible. This is for you!

I also just wanted to reinforce that if you have any questions please read the FAQ prior to emailing/getting in contact with me! I answered pretty much every question under the sun that you might have to make it easier for you and me! :)
